What exactly should you include in your roadside emergency kit? Our Jim Clark Chevrolet-Cadillac team gets this question from time to time, so we compiled a short list of must-haves.
A First Aid Kit
Tending to injuries should be a priority, so keep a small but comprehensive first aid kit in your car at all times. It should contain:
- Thermometer, tweezers, scissors
- Bandages, gauze, tape
- Aspirin, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone
- Non-latex gloves, instant cold press, blanket
- A defibrillator (if you're trained to use one)
Mechanical Supplies
Just in case you run into mechanical trouble, keep the following on hand:
- Spare tire
- Duct tape
- Multipurpose tool kit
- Jumper cables
- Flashlight
- Fire extinguisher
- Cell phone car charger
- Reflective triangles for your car
Long Waits and Brief Trips
Some breakdowns require a long wait for roadside assistance or, at worst, a trip on foot to find help. Here's what to keep in your roadside emergency kit for these instances:
- Warm clothing
- Rain poncho
- Reflective vest
- Compass
- Drinking water
- Nonperishable, high-energy food
- Additional cold weather items (cat litter for traction, snow brush, shovel, windshield washer fluid)
